DeLorean DMC-12 illustrates how a good idea goes bad with Xcar

Xcar Delorean DMC-12

When John Z. DeLorean set out to build a car, he had good intentions - it'd be small, efficient, sporty, affordable and safe, complete with a rust-free, stainless-steel body. The outcome, though, was a lamentable mess, a coupe whose prestige rests more with its gullwing doors and its star-making role in Back To The Future than in its actual driving character.

Among the many knocks on the DeLorean DMC-12 was its shoddy quality (courtesy of its Northern Ireland factory), its anemic 2.8-liter V6 and an automatic transmission whose shifts registered on the geologic scale. The suspension was overly soft, the steering numb and the brakes left a lot to be desired.

None of that, as Xcar explains, really matters. The DeLorean is still a deeply cool car. Take a look at the latest video from the video outfit to see why.

DeLorean time capsule dusted off, made new again

DeLorean DMC-12 Time Capsule

Time-capsule cars are their own, interesting little sub-genre of the collector car world. Unlike barn finds, which are generally just forgotten and left to time, there's a sense of deliberateness to time capsules that makes them even more exciting.

One of the most interesting recent time-capsule cases we've heard of has been well recapped by AutoWeek. Ironic as it may be, the time-capsule car in question is none other than the DeLorean DMC-12, the iconic star of the Back To The Future series. This particular example had just 308 miles on the ticker when it was brought in to Mike Vietro, a San Francisco Corvette dealer.

Vietro's experience with the car and it's owner makes for an interesting read. Hop over to AutoWeek and have a look.

eBay Find of the Day: 1981 DeLorean with 570-hp twin-turbo Buick V6 [w/videos]

DeLorean Twin-Turbo

"Are you telling me that you built a time machine... out of a DeLorean?" So asked one Marty McFly of his mentor Dr. Emmett Brown, who replied: "The way I see it, if you're gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?"

Doc Brown was right, of course: with an exotic mid-engine layout, gullwing doors and stainless steel body, the DeLorean DMC-12 sure looked the part. It just needed a little more juice. Well this one might not have 1.21 gigawatts of time-bending power - that'd be more than one and a half million horsepower - but it does have more than the 150 hp in the the standard 2.8-liter V6.

DeLorean Twin-TurboThat's because this particular DeLorean has had its stock Peugeot Renault Volvo engine swapped out for a Buick-sourced, all-aluminum, 4.3-liter V6 from the Grand National. Dutteiller Performance didn't leave the engine in stock form, either: while they were swapping it out, they added a pair of turbochargers, new pistons, crank, cams and much, much more.

The result is an engine dyno'd at a massive 708 horsepower and tuned to deliver 570 hp. Dubbed the World's Fastest DeLorean, it was featured on Drive TV in an episode of Tuned you can view below along with another slideshow of the engine build. And best of all, it can be yours: it's for sale on eBay Motors with less than 37,000 miles on the odometer, with bids currently standing at $13,300 as we go to press.
