Classic Mercedes 300SL Gullwing comes to troubling end at Mille Miglia

Wrecked Mercedes-Benz 300SL

The Mille Miglia was once one of Europe's premiere sports car racing events, but eventually it got too dangerous and was canceled. Decades later, the race was converted into a historic rally without as much real motorsport competition, and it's now an event which lets wealthy owners stretch the legs of their classics in the Italian countryside.

However, the cars are still running on public roads, and that can be dangerous. Just look at this calamity suffered by Konstantin Sixt, heir to the Sixt rental car company, when his Mercedes-Benz 300SL coupe with its famous gullwing doors hit a BMW 1 Series. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries reported.
The Gullwing is worth in the neighborhood of $1 million, if recent sales are any indication, and it appears to have been badly damaged in the accident. Of course, with a car of this worth, there's little doubt it will live to see another day, and possibly another Mille if the owner remains unswayed. Scroll down watch a brief video for a better look at this German classic's current, thoroughly wrinkled condition.

Mercedes 300SL Gullwing wrecked by mechanic

Wrecked Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing

This one isn't going to be for the faint of heart. A mechanic recently destroyed a Mercedes-Benz 300SL during a test drive near Pleidelsheim in Baden-Wütterburg, Germany. The owner brought the car to Mechatronics, a shop specializing in high-end and vintage Mercedes-Benz vehicles, for some work. After the job was done, a 26-year-old technician hopped behind the wheel and brought a 19-year-old apprentice with him for the ride. As you can see, the car did come back in one piece, but that piece didn't quite look like it used to. Police say - surprise! - speed was a factor when the vintage Gullwing left the road and rolled. Neither the driver nor the passenger were seriously injured.

All told, the damage is estimated 650,000 euros, or $830,000 at current conversion rates. Both the car and the garage are sufficiently insured to cover the damages, and Spiegel Online says the owner took the news about his destroyed classic in stride. At this point, it's unclear whether their driver will pay to have this particular car repaired.

Clark Gable’s 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing doesn’t sell, then does sell for $1.85 million [UPDATE: w/video]

Clark Gable's 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing

How much extra value does previous celebrity ownership add to of a car? Really, there's no way to know until the car in question hits the auction block and bidders start raising their hands. In the case of the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing you see above, the celebrity owner is none other than Clark Gable, who purchased it new. After Gable's death in 1960, the car changed hands a few times before settling with Charles Wood in 1975.

A high-dollar restoration was performed in 1989, and period accessories added by Gable himself were kept in place, including the Rudge knock-off wheels and Nardi steering wheel. Any Mercedes-Benz 300SL is worth a big chunk of money. In the case of Clark Gable's old Gullwing, the bidding stalled at $1.9 million here at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale. As one of the 5000-series cars, this 300SL carried a reserve, and a bit of after-the-fact dealmaking saw the car change hands for $1.85 million.

You can see our high-res image gallery above, and the car's official auction description below.
