2013 Quail Motorsports Gathering wows with modern masterpieces

2013 Quail Motorsports Gathering

Pebble Beach is an outstanding event if you're interested in pre-war classics, but outside of the parking lots, it's a bit light on more modern stuff. The Quail, now in its eleventh year, leans far more towards the present day, and has become one of the must-attend events of the Monterey car week.

Like Pebble, though, it's a highly exclusive affair, with triple-digit ticket prices that usually sell out at the same rate as a Justin Bieber concert. If you're one of the lucky few to hold a pass, though, you'll be rubbing elbows with a who's who of the auto world. One of the highlights of this year's event was the appearance of one Michael Schumacher, who showed up alongside one of his Formula One cars. A retrospective was also held on Lamborghini's 50 years of production, as well as another celebration of Aston Martin's centennial. There was also a tribute to the late Martin Swig, one of the co-founders of the California Mille, who passed away last year.

The cars, not surprisingly, were epic. Lamborghini, Pagani, Spyker, Rolls-Royce, BMW, McLaren, Bugatti and Galpin Ford all showed new models to the public for the first time, while there were also appearances by Jim Glickenhaus and his Ferrari P4/5 and P4/5 Competizione, marking the first time the coach-built masterpiece and its racing offspring were shown together. Finally, the Petersen Museum showed off its wares, including the late Steve McQueen's gorgeous Jaguar XK-SS.

We have plenty of live images from The Quail in the high-res gallery above. Be sure to take a look.

2012 Quail Motorsports Gathering is excellent, if you have the means

Quail Motorsports Gathering 2012

It would be unfair to call the Quail Motorsports Gathering a car show. Doing so would be like saying Bruce Lee was sufficiently talented in the art of self defense. Every year the Quail Lodge in Carmel, California plays host to both manufacturers and collectors for a day, and this year saw a typically impressive range of featured models. From the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse to the SRT Viper GTS Launch Edition and the wild McLaren X-1 Concept to a passel of Shelby Cobra examples and a smattering of pre-war Alfa Romeo classics, the gathering serves as the chewy center of the Monterey weekend.

Being forced to pick a personal favorite would be unduly cruel, though we found ourselves particularly smitten with a cherry Honda S800 and the carbon fiber Vintech 550 Tribute. Take a gander at the photo gallery above for a hint of the cars on hand.

Completed Bugatti Type 64 Coupe to make debut at Quail Motorsports Gathering

Bugatti Type 64 Coupe

If you're one of the Autoblog faithful you might remember our story on the Bugatti Type 64 Coupe chassis on display at the Mullin Automotive Museum, one of just three built by the French carmaker before the death of Jean Bugatti. At the time, we told you the museum had plans to finalize the construction of the car with custom coachwork - only one example received bodywork from the factory - and now that time has finally come to unveil the finished product. Today it was announced that a "virtually completed" car will make its debut later this month at the Quail Motorsports Gathering in Monterey.

"We've dedicated much of our efforts at the Museum to honor the Bugatti family and the marque, but never have we done something of this scale," said Peter Mullin, Chairman of the Mullin Automotive Museum. "I cannot imagine a greater token of respect to the Bugatti family than to help finish Jean Bugatti's beloved final masterpiece."

We'll have live photos of the completed Bugatti Type 64 Coupe as part of our extensive Monterey coverage next week. Want to see the car in person for yourself? The museum says it will have also have the car on display at their facility in Oxnard, CA later this year.

Scroll down below to read the official announcement from the Mullin Museum.
