2014 Quail Motorsports Gathering amazes with beauty from every era

2014 Quail Motorsports Gathering

If you love cars and motorcycles from past and present, then the Quail might be a little slice of heaven for you. This garden party is set on a golf course during the weekend of automotive events in Monterey, headlined by the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, and it brings together a fascinating mix of the newest hypercars sitting just a few feet away from the rarest classics of yesteryear.

The models on display for this year's show were some of the most epically beautiful pieces of machinery known to man, and the range was huge. In terms of modern rarities, Pagani was there showing off the Huaryra in a variety of colors. The paint was so thin on one of them that you could just spot the wave of the carbon fiber below it peeking out like tiger stripes. Bespoke Porsche "reimaginer" Singer was also there showing off its utterly amazing creations.

The group of classics on display was just as jaw dropping, if not more so. One exhibition had Ferrari's modern supercars sitting all in a row starting with a 288 GTO, the insanely rare Evo version, F40, F50 and an Enzo. There were also two examples of the Jaguar XK-SS on the lawn, which is astounding considering only 16 were made. One of them Steve McQueen's car from the Petersen Automotive Museum.

We have a ton of images from this year's show in our gallery, and whether you love cars new or old, it's definitely worth taking a look.

1962 Ferrari 250 GTO hits record $38 million sale at Bonhams’ Monterey auction

This weekend's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegrance brings together some of the rarest and most expensive automobiles in the world onto a tiny peninsula in California jutting out into the Pacific Ocean. But this year, there has been one vehicle on everyone's lips - a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. Bonhams put up this incredibly rare Prancing Horse at no reserve for its auction at the Quail Lodge, meaning it could have sold for just a dollar. It didn't though, this ex-Jo Schlesser owned Ferrari sold for a staggering $38.115 million. That makes it the most expensive car ever sold at auction, beating out Bonhams' sale of a Mercedes W196R last year for $29.65 million.

Ferrari only built 39 of these racers, and they have been million-dollar cars for years. One reportedly sold privately for $52 million last year, and one built for Stirling Moss went for $35 million privately in 2012.

While the spectacle of seeing a 250 GTO drive across the auction block with no reserve and then set a record price was certainly amazing, it wasn't the only rare Ferrari up for sale during the evening. Bonhams also handpicked some of the most collectible Ferraris in the world and brought them to the stage. The ten cars included a 1962 250 GT Short-Wheelbase Speciale Aerodinamica that went for $6.875 million, a 1953 250 Mille Miglia Berlinetta driven to racing victory by Phil Hill for $7.26 million and even a 1978 312 T3 Formula One car for $2.31 million. All told, the group of them sold for $65.945 million.

Scroll down to read Bonhams' press release about the auction, and check our gallery to view these very valuable Ferraris.

Ferrari 250 GTO heading to The Quail with no reserve

Ferrari 250 GTO #3851

It's not every day that a Ferrari 250 GTO changes hands. It is, after all, one of the most highly coveted cars ever made, and there were only 39 of them built in the first place. So when one goes up for sale, it tends to fetch millions. Tens of millions, actually, and the prices keep escalating.

Throughout most of the 1980s they were trading hands for six figures. In 1989 one sold for $10 million. A few months later, $13 million. Prices fluctuated in the 90s, but by 2012, one sold for a whopping $35 million, eclipsed the following year at $52 million. Nobody knows what the next one will sell for, but we're about to find out.

That's because Bonhams has got one consigned for its upcoming auction at the Quail Lodge during Monterey weekend next month. And it's offering it without reserve, meaning that it could sell for the opening bid (however unlikely), it could break the previous record or it could land anywhere in between or beyond.

The example in question is chassis No. 3851 GT, the 19th example, completed on September 11, 1962. The Ferrari was delivered new to French racer Jo Schlesser (who would be killed in an experimental Honda F1 car six years later at the French Grand Prix). It subsequently crashed at the Montlhéry Autodrome, was fully repaired at the factory and returned to competition the following year, trading hands once more before a young Fabrizio Violati saved it from the crusher in 1965. He owned it and kept it as part of his celebrated Maranello Rosso Collection right up until his passing in 2010, and four years later, his family is putting it up for auction - making this the longest single-owner GTO in existence, which ought only to contribute to its value.

We obsessively covered Pebble Beach and all of Monterey 2013

Monterey 2013

It won't be long now until greens crews have replaced impossibly rare and expensive metal on the links at Pebble Beach and The Quail, transporters have packed up hundreds of millions of dollars worth of motorsports history and exited the paddocks at Laguna Seca, and scads of auctioneers are nursing hands sore from gavel banging and record-profits-inspired high-fives. All in, it's been one hell of a week here on the Monterey Peninsula.

For those following along with our adventures in Northern California over the last few days, you'll likely have noted that our Monterey coverage has expanded far beyond the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Pebble may still represent the lovely finale to the run of events, but we've brought you news and pictures from The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, the RM Auctions and more.

Keeping tabs on all the news out of Monterey isn't easy (we know... it's not a cinch to cover, either), so we've collected all of our reports into one place, here. Read on to find quick links to all of our Monterey coverage, don't skip the amazing gallery images... and enjoy.
