Not attending the Woodward Dream Cruise? Watch it here, right now

Woodward Dream Cruise 2009

What's a gearhead to do? This weekend marks two big automotive events on the American calendar - the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and the Woodward Dream Cruise. You can follow along right here at Autoblog for all the action from Pebble Beach, while Woodward is a trickier proposition. It's not so much news or new models at Woodward, but the atmosphere. Capturing it via text and photos isn't the easiest thing to do.

Thankfully, the team at Autoline Detroit will be webcasting live from Woodward between 4:00 and 5:00 PM EST today. Now, you might ask yourself, "Why aren't they out there tomorrow, you know, during the actual Cruise?" Despite the "official" cruise being on Saturday, the heart of the event is spread out over the week preceeding (this writer would make the argument that the Thursday and Friday night before the cruise are actually far more fun than the day itself).

Autoline also has a slew of guests lined up for the event, including Ralph Gilles, president and CEO of Chrysler's SRT performance brand. Ian Callum, head of design for Jaguar, will also be on hand. Indeed, the guests are the other reason for the Friday webcast - Callum has already announced that he'll be cruising Woodward in a new F-Type, and we've no doubt that Gilles will be doing the same (although more likely behind the wheel of a Viper). Getting time with them on Saturday just isn't feasible.

We'll be showing the webcast live. All you need to do is scroll down. You can also head over to the Autoline website, and submit your questions Gilles, Callum and the rest of the guests.

Chrysler’s Woodward Dream Cruise festivities include Ram concept truck debut

Chrysler's 2013 Woodward Dream Cruise will host the unveiling of a Ram concept truck.

The streets will be crowded next weekend along Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak, Michigan for the 19th Annual Woodward Dream Cruise. As part of the run-up to the festivities, Chrysler has announced that all of its brands - Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Fiat, SRT and Mopar - will bring along their latest vehicles. Also included will be a collection of classic American cars and various activities for attendees at the official Chrysler location on the corner of Woodward and 13 Mile Road.

Special to this year, Ram brand director Bob Hegbloom and head of design John Dehner will unveil a Ram concept truck on Saturday. Chrysler will also bring Ryan Friedlinghaus of West Coast Customs fame along to show off a few custom Chrysler-made vehicles of his own. Fans of the brand on Facebook will get the chance to virtually customize a vehicle from the automaker's portfolio, with the winner getting their dream car built for them by Chrysler. Pretty cool stuff, no?

As in past years, Ford and General Motors will have an official presence at the event as well, and you can expect to see plenty of cars of all makes and models from all parts of the globe. The madness starts this Friday, August 16, from 4:30 PM to 10 PM, with the main event taking place on Saturday, from 9 AM to 9 PM. For more details on the show, including events and their times, check out the press release below.

The List #0248: Attend the Woodward Dream Cruise

Jessi Combs in Corvair with Scott Burgess at 2012 Woodward Dream Cruise

The Woodward Dream Cruise is billed as the largest one-day automotive event in the world. Around 1.5 million people show up on a Saturday each August and line both sides of a seven-mile stretch of historic Woodward Avenue in the outskirts of Detroit. They come to watch some 40,000+ classic, custom and muscle cars cruise all eight lanes of road at little more than idling speed. Begun only in 1995, the Cruise feels like it's been happening since the golden era of Detroit that it honors. For Detroiters, it's become a way of life. For everyone else, it's high up on the list of 1,001 Car Things To Do Before You Die.

We sent Jessi Combs to the D during Woodward week to experience the event for herself and report back for The List. As we suspected, she encountered all types of native Detroiters who love the Woodward Dream Cruise, as well as some anti-Cruisers who don't share that sentiment. Sans Patrick for this episode, Jessi met up with Autoblog/AOL Auto's own Scott Burgess, who was participating in the Cruise in his own 1964 Chevy Corvair Convertible.

Akerson auctioning off personal 1958 Corvette for charity [w/video]

Dan Akerson's 1958 Corvette to cross the auction block for charity

Dan Akerson will be taking a final parade lap at this weekend's Woodward Dream Cruise. No, much to the chagrin of the punditry, he's not stepping down as CEO of General Motors, just driving his 1958 Chevrolet Corvette for the last time before sending it off to auction for charity.

Akerson's benevolence will benefit Habitat for Humanity Detroit, which is fighting urban blight in the city's Morningside Commons neighborhood on the east side. GM's CEO has already given Habitat a million bucks this year, according to the press release. Details of when and where the car will be sold "will be announced shortly."

Clearly Akerson wants to be a role model for the sort of corporate stewardship GM sees as necessary to revitalize its hometown. Scroll down to see video of the car.
